ELLE Style Awards: Suki Waterhouse Receives The Performer Award From Sharleen Spiteri

The actor and model-turned-singer-songwriter accepted the award at the ELLE Style Awards.

Suki Waterhouse took to the stage in London this evening to accept the Performer award at this year’s ELLE Style Awards.

Waterhouse, who was presented with the award by musician Sharleen Spiteri, wore Kim Jones for Fendi for the occasion and thanked the Scottish singer and guitarist and Texas front-woman for inspiring her in her career so far.

Not only has West London-born Waterhouse made a name for herself as a model and actor, most recently in Amazon Prime’s acclaimed series Daisy Jones & The Six, she has now turned her attention to music.

She released her debut album, I Can’t Let Go, in 2022 and has, in the past 18 months, performed 115 shows. Speaking on her pivot to music, Waterhouse tells ELLE UK: ‘Baby-stepping, getting a bit better every time. If I go back and listen to all the music I never released, it’s like snapshots of time. Those years are so precious to me, all the invisible work I did, the tonnes of songs I wrote that just weren’t good enough, and the people I met along the way.’

Waterhouse, who is renowned for her eclectic sartorial sense, has honed her on-stage style to coincide with the whimsical nature of her music. ‘The first show I did I literally went out in jeans and a T-shirt. And I think that maybe it was something in me going, “You don’t deserve to go out and look crazy and done up and super out there – yet. Just be simple, don’t draw attention to yourself.”’

While working as a model in the beginning of her career, Waterhouse spent a lot of time doubting her musical abilities. ‘There was obviously a lot of time feeling quite swallowed up and like, “Oh god, am I ever going to be seen as anything different than what I am at this moment?”’ What would she tell that same 21-year-old self if she had the chance? ‘There’s no blueprint of how to survive in this industry. There is space for who you are and what you want to contribute – you just have to make it for yourself.’

When accepting the award, Waterhouse said: 'ELLE is such a fantastic magazine. I’m so glad that The ELLE Style Awards are back, it’s always a really fun night in London.'
