Emily Blunt Says She Learned About Her Oscar Nomination 'Directly After Picking Up My Dog's Poop'

Emily Blunt's got the scoop!
The Oppenheimer actress, 40, reflected on earning her first-ever Oscar nomination during an interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast at The 92nd Street Y in N.Y.C. on Tuesday, recalling the everyday, relatable chore she had just finished doing when she heard the "magical" news.
"I did have a brief cry when I learned ... directly after picking up my dog’s poop," Blunt told MTV’s Josh Horowitz, who hosts the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "I did pick up the poop, and then I heard that I got nominated."
She added that her husband and fellow actor John Krasinski "had a really good cry, as well" as they learned she'd nabbed a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role in Oppenheimer.
"After helping me with the poop — I think he went and put it in the trash, and then we both cried," Blunt joked.
For her performance as Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer, wife of physicist and Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy, himself up for Best Actor), Blunt earned an Academy Award nod for Supporting Actress on Jan. 23.
"I’m completely overcome and overjoyed. Weak legged and immensely grateful for this moment," she said in a statement at the time. "It goes without saying that this staggering film has changed my life."
"Colossal congratulations to my OppenHomies who all blew the doors off the place in their fields," Blunt added, shouting out the cast and crew of the Christopher Nolan-directed epic. "We are a family in this, so to raise a glass alongside my friends is a euphoric feeling indeed."
Joining the Devil Wears Prada star in the Supporting Actress category are Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers, America Ferrera for Barbie and Jodie Foster for Nyad.
In addition to Blunt, the other first-time acting nominees this year are Murphy, 47, Brooks, 34, Randolph, 37, and Ferrera, 39, plus Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).
Oppenheimer became the third-highest-grossing movie of 2023 and is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
It also marks the first time Blunt has ever starred in a Best Picture nominee. In an interview with PEOPLE, she equated filming on location in New Mexico to being at "summer camp."
"We were all in the same hotel in the middle of the New Mexican desert," she recalled in July 2023. "We only had each other.”
The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
